The relationship between l1 communication apprehension and l2 willingness to communicate in Turkish university setting

| dc.description.abstract | Yabancı dil öğreniminde öğrencilerin ana dilleri ve hedef dilleri arasında dil bilgisi ve kelime bilgisi açısından bir kıyaslama yaptığı oldukça popüler bir görüştür. Daha ani gerçekleşen konuşma ortamında ise iki dili mukayese edebilme şansı zaman alabilecek bir durumdur ve akıcı bir konuşma ortamı sağlamak için uygun değildir. Çekingenlik ve anksiyete ise konuşmada bulunan kişilerin ise iletişimden tamamen kopma ve kaçınma gibi sonuçlara sebep olduğu gözlemlenmiştir. Bu çalışma, bu durumları göz önünde bulundurarak ana dilde iletişim kaygısı yaşayan bireylerin yabancı dilde iletişime olan isteğini analiz edecektir. Bir başka deyişle, bu çalışma ana dilde iletişim kaygısnın, yabancı dilde iletişime olan hevesi ne kadar zedelediğini gözlemlemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmaya İngilizce öğrenmekte olan 208 üniversite seviyesinde öğrenci katılmıştır ve bu öğrencilerin hepsinin dersleri tamamıyla İngilizce işlenmektedir. Bu nicel çalışmada, katılımcıların iletişim kaygısı ve iletişim isteği verileri anketlerle toplanmıştır ve bu iki kuram arasındaki ilişki de basit doğrusal regresyon ile analiz edilmiştir. Sonuçlar, ana dilde iletişim kaygısının yalnızca sınıf ortamında yabancı dilde iletişime olan isteğe bir etkisi olduğu görülmüştür. Diğer durumlarda ise anlamlı bir ilişki bulunamamıştır. | en_US |
| dc.description.abstract | It is a popular belief that during the process of second language learning, one of the common habits of students is relating their native language to their second language in terms of grammatical forms and vocabulary. Considering the speaking environment which is rather more spontaneous, it is quite difficult to relate two languages and pursue a fluent and smooth communication. However, insecurities and anxiety during the communication takes the individuals to the point where they rather avoid the communication. Taking this into account, this study aims to discover these insecurities and anxious feelings in L1; and if it is harming the willingness to communicate levels in L2. A total of 208 university level English learners who are in an English medium programme joined the study. A quantitative approach was used to analyze the levels of communication apprehension and willingness to communicate and a regression analysis was used to analyze the relationship between communication apprehension and willingness to communicate. The results showed a significant relationship between In-Class Willingness to Communicate and Communication Apprehension. Therefore, the outcomes of the present study suggests that communication apprehension levels have the potential to predict the willingness to communicate in L2. | en_US |
