A Contextual Approach to Stereotype Content Model: Stereotype Contents in Context
(ELSEVIER SCI LTD, 2013) Aktan, Timucin; Maree, K
The present paper aims to review the strengths and weakness of the Stereotype Content Model (SCM; Fiske et al., 2002). Thus, a context sensitive perspective was provided to overcome the shortcomings of SCM. In the first section, contributions of SCM are discussed. Secondly, a special focus is devoted to the competence and warmth dimensions to identify several difficulties of the model. Finally, a context sensitive perspective is suggested to overcome these difficulties. In this perspective, three contextual factors suggested: the kinds of competition, legitimacy of status, and constraints of social reality. Finally, limitations and suggestions for future studies are presented. (C) 2013 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Aim, shoot, deplete: playing video games depletes self-regulatory resources
(Taylor & Francıs Inc, 2015) Harma, Mehmet; Aktan, Timucin; Cagiltay, Kursat
Two experiments investigated whether playing video games impaired subsequent self regulation. In Experiment 1 (n = 43), participants either played a video game (i.e., Quake III) for 10 min or just browsed the Internet for the same time interval. Participants in the video game condition had slower response time than participants in the no-game condition. In Experiment 2 (n = 94), either participants played Quake III, or watched Quake III game scenes, or they were asked to suppress their thought for 10 min. Participants in the game-playing condition and thought suppression condition showed less persistence on a given unsolvable anagram task than participants in the game-watching condition. Overall, the findings confirm the idea that playing video game consumes self-regulatory sources due to active instead of passive responses in a highly demanding game environment.

Parental Attachment Patterns in Mothers of Children with Anxiety Disorder
(MDPI, 2020) Karayagiz, Saban; Aktan, Timucin; Karayagiz, Lider Zeynep
Anxiety disorder on of the most common illnesses in the context of psychiatry. Potential causes include genetic and environmental factors, as well as the parental attachment of the individuals. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between parental attachment style and anxiety disorders for a group of children and their parents. Study data were collected from the mothers (N = 40) of children with an anxiety disorder who visited a child psychiatry outpatient clinic at a city hospital and a private institution in Kayseri (Turkey) in 2018. For the control group, 40 mothers of children without any mental illness were also included in the study. The purposive sampling method was used in the selection of the participants for both groups (experimental and control). Sociodemographic data sheet and parental bonding instrument (PBI) were utilized as the data collection instruments. Then, data were analyzed based on the descriptive analysis methodology that included mean scores, standard deviation,p-value, t-experimental, two-way ANOVA and Pearson correlation experiments by using SPSS v.22. The findings revealed that the mothers of the participants with a college degree in the experimental group had fewer perceptions of protection (t = 2.38,p< 0.01), but more perception of care from their mothers than fathers (t =-2.28,p< 0.05). In addition, although the perceived care of parents was found lower than the participants in the control group, the participants in both groups evaluated their parents analogously for overprotection. Findings showed that the mothers in the experimental group predominantly described their parents as neglecting.

Reliability and validity of Turkish version of Pediatric Outcome Data Collection Instrument (PODCI) for people with cerebral palsy
(Turkey Assoc Physiotherapists, 2013) Dilbay, Nilufer Keskin; Gunel, Mintaze Kerem; Aktan, Timucin
Purpose: Assessment of functional health and health related quality of life (HRQL) of children with cerebral palsy (CP) are important for effective rehabilitation practices. Therefore, the present study was aimed to provide a Turkish version of PODCI which is one of the prevalently used HRQL scales in CP, to investigate reliability and validity of the scale for children with CP. Methods: Age range was between 2 and 18 years, 105 children with CP, 48 healthy children and their mothers were recruited for the study subjects were divided into three age groups, i.e. 2-7, 8-12, and 13-18. GMFCS levels, clinical types, demographical and socio-economical data of the cases with CP, PODCI scores and also PedsQL and CHQ PF-50 scores as a gold standard, of participants were recorded. Results: Findings of the reliability of PODCI showed that the internal consistency was acceptable and test-retest reliability was quite high (Alpha=0.93, ICC=0.992). Findings of the validity of the scale indicated that it was highly sensitive in separating children with CP from healthy children (p<0.001). The scale could differ age groups, clinical types and GMFCS groups only in the physical functioning domain (p<0.05). The correlations among subscales of three scales illustrated that the convergent validity was established while divergent validity was low. Conclusion: Turkish version of PODCI is reliable and valid for assessing functional health and HRQL of children with CP.
